![]() The best part is that you can seamlessly switch between computers at the click of a button.Ī KVM switch achieves this by connecting one keyboard, one monitor, and one mouse to multiple computers. As a result, you save loads of desk space (by reducing the connected devices), and you do away with unnecessary wires. It is an efficient device that simultaneously minimizes your peripheral devices and connects them to multiple computers. It can be a nightmare.įortunately, a KVM (Keyboard Video Mouse) switch offers the perfect solution. Add to that the numerous wires you are forced to manage. Not to mention having to go back and forth connecting and disconnecting devices as and when you need them. While working on multiple laptops, you have to deal with multiple keyboards, mice, monitors, flash drives, and whatnot. One cannot over-emphasize this statement in the context of working on computers, more specifically, working on multiple computers. You’ll probably still have the issue with your microphone/headphones if it’s 3.5mm or USB, but I’ve found that the above steps made it tolerable to work with two PCs.A cluttered desk leads to a cluttered mind, which leads to procrastination and low productivity. If you’re like me and you hate wires, having a cleaner desk is also a pretty cool benefit. Bluetooth side steps the problem entirely by not using wires. No matter which KVM you use, there’s a good chance you’ll experience some amount of jank. IMO all but the most serious of gamers, Bluetooth is a good solution to the issue of swapping your peripherals to a different pc on demand. These solutions cost money, and still aren’t quite as simple as pressing a button on your KVM switch, but they are things to think about going forward. If you look hard, you can find keyboards and mice that allow for distinct wireless profiles making it easy to switch devices with the press of a button. The one downside is that they won’t work in your bios, but that’s a small concession. Bluetooth keyboards and mice have crazy long battery lives and require no cables. The only thing I’d recommend against is Bluetooth headphones, not because of sound, but because of battery life. Over all, it leads to a cleaner setup, and probably removes the need for a display switching KVM. Switching to a single monitor means fewer cables to run, and fewer connections to manage. You can also get away with a smaller desk. These are a good compromise in that they save on weight and are compatible with more mounts. For most people I would recommend not getting a 32:9 monitor, instead I’d go for one on the more reasonable ultra-wides. Instead of an all encompassing solution, i took several steps to simplify my workflow, and the process of switching between work and personal computers.īuy an ultra-wide monitor. I had a similar issue when I started my new job. Will update later if it works out.įinal edit: got a new kvm switch, everything seems to be working great now. Also sucks when in game.īasically my question is: is there a better way to do what I am trying to accomplish here? Is the kvm switch bunk?ĮDIT: Alright seems like the kvm switch is bunk, or just not suited for my needs here. Also, sometimes the usb connections will temporarily fail as well resulting in the mouse, keyboard, and headset not working for a few seconds. ![]() Really sucks when I'm in the middle of the game. Every so often on the personal computer the DP connection will fail for 5-10 seconds leading to a black screen. After getting tired of swapping cables around all the time I decided to get a kvm switch to make things easier. I have a monitor which I use for both my work laptop and my personal desktop.
